What is Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)?

FSM is a non-invasive therapy that utilizes extremely low levels of electrical current set at specific frequencies that are thought to resonate with various tissues in the body.   What makes it unique is the use of two channels with one being directed at the condition (such as pain) and one at target tissue (such as nerve). By matching frequencies to specific conditions or tissue types, FSM promotes cellular healing and reduces inflammation at the source of your pain.

What is an FSM Treatment Like?

During your session, you’ll rest comfortably in sitting or lying on the treatment table while current is applied to the targeted area using damp towels or adhesive patches. Most sessions last 30-60 minutes, though some may extend longer depending on your specific needs and treatment goals. The clinician may also perform gentle manual therapy to the area while the current is running.

Who Could Benefit?
  • Individuals with chronic nerve, joint, or muscle pain
  • Athletes recovering from sports injuries or strains
  • Patients dealing with fibromyalgia or complex regional pain
  • Anyone seeking faster recovery from post-surgical tissue inflammation
Who Should Avoid FSM?

While FSM is exceptionally safe, it is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or have a cardiac pacemaker. We conduct a thorough screening during your consultation to ensure FSM is the right choice for you.

A Brief History of FSM

The core principles of Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) trace back to the early 20th century, with clinicians using specific frequencies to support tissue health. However, it wasn’t until the 1990s that Dr. Carolyn McMakin rediscovered these historical protocols and refined them into a modern clinical system. By categorizing frequencies for specific conditions and tissue types, she transformed anecdotal successes into a systematic, evidence-informed framework widely used today.

In contemporary physical therapy, FSM serves as a bridge between traditional manual care and advanced cellular science. Unlike high-intensity electrical stimulation that simply masks pain, FSM uses current levels that match your body’s natural bioelectricity to encourage repair at a cellular level. It is this gentle, holistic evolution that makes FSM a cornerstone of our concierge practice, providing a precise and reassuring path to recovery for patients who value evidence-based Innovation.
